Like many people, for months I have been annoyed – nay, angered – by the poor standard of English grammar that appears on the BBC’s website and in captions on their television programmes. On average two or three times a week, I have used the Contact Us form to alert the national broadcaster to these errors. It has been a thankless task, but my reward has been in seeing the errors (on the website, at least) corrected. But tonight the Beeb excelled itself.
A large proportion of Britain’s TV viewers have been following the entertainment show Strictly Come Dancing. I admit that I was one of them. But tonight, shortly after the result was announced, the BBC webpage dedicated to the show carried this headline:
The BBC’s staff have hit a new low, and I wonder whether it is even worth my while pointing out errors in future.
