Today at lunch my wife declined to come to the opera with me later this week because she didn’t want to hear “caterwauling”. Our lunch guest agreed. I said “Pardon?”
Three hours later I received an invitation to join a group on LinkedIn started by someone who described himself as a batrachologist.
I spend my working life dealing with words but had come across neither of these until today. With the first I doubted my wife and guest’s assertion that a caterwaul was a howling or wailing noise, and went to look it up (they were right). With the second, I now know that I have a batrachian living in my garden, behind the shed. I shall henceforth use both words as often as practicable.
That both these great words came up within a few hours of each other got me worried that I must have led an even more sheltered life than I thought. Or is it simply that not everyone can know every word?
What unusual words have brought you adlubescence today?
